Today’s Family is a not-for-profit early learning and child care organization that is inclusive and advocates for all children and families. In late 2018, with support from the City of Hamilton, they engaged Earthscape to create exciting and inclusive outdoor spaces for several child care sites, including Franklin Road.
This play space design builds upon the site’s rectilinear layout, where the straight lines are sometimes highlighted and at other times fragmented by play elements and timber edging that varies in height and width. The design relies heavily on the warmth of wood as the primary material, but its overall form deviates from conventional round log-shape. Play elements utilize squares and rectangles that build upon each other to create complex shapes to entice young explorers. Within this geometric framework, trees, shrubs, rocks and sand add a contrasting curvilinear dimension to the site.
The playground has been designed with ‘insider secrets’ – intentional and thoughtful design elements that add to the playground experience. For example, a timber bench is positioned to provide children with a convenient place to observe activity around the nearby community mail box; windows in the palisade fence are framed by fire-truck-red timbers because they offer a clear view to the fire station across the street.
