Play Value

The Songbird is a whimsical and familiar form. At six feet high, it is so much larger than life, yet inviting and playful as a playground centrepiece. In plan view, the bird’s shape tapers from tail to head, and the tail twists to add personality.

The back of the bird is a perfect place for lounging. Two accessible interior benches are a cozy spot to meet with a small group of friends in the shade. Cutouts up the back of the bird allow children to climb the exterior and perch on the head. Similar in function to a play hut, the Songbird is both a low and high-challenge play feature.

Merits

With pre-designed stain options to represent different bird species, the Songbird can be customized as a Robin, Blue Jay, Goldfinch, Cardinal, Chickadee. The Songbird creates beautiful opportunities for social play as well as climbing for the more adventurous thrill seeker.

The round and gentle shape and familiar form are immediately recognizable and may be considered as simple, playable public art that could be suited to a space outside of a library or in a town square.

Accessibility

The Songbird is an accessible ground-level play feature when situated on an accessible path or surfacing.

Materials

The Songbird is constructed with a marine-grade plywood frame and is cladded in Accoya.
