YMCA Pilgrim Wood Child Care

Client: YMCA Oakville – Pilgrim Wood
Location: Oakville, Ontario
Completion Date: Summer 2017

This child care centre playground in Oakville incorporates natural materials with bursts of colour to create an inviting and welcoming play environment. A natural extension to the indoor play zones, winding pathways and small gardens around the playground break up the space to create smaller activity zones.  A shaded astroturf area is a wonderful gathering space.  The amphitheatre is suitable for large group gatherings or as an active play zone where trikes can loop around and children can learn to pedal up and down inclined surfaces.  The sand play area gives children the chance to dig, build and create.

The playscape is built in such a manner that non-prescriptive play elements enable children to play in their own way and in an open-ended manner. Timber borders and a cluster of log steppers in the sand play area offer informal gathering and seating areas but they also create interesting pathways for circulation.  Chalkboards promote opportunities for creativity and learning in the playground. A play hut offers shade, shelter and quiet seclusion from the activity of the playground.  The versatility of the playground design allows for the child care curriculum of the school to be incorporated into outdoor play.
