Landscape|Paysages article on Risky Play by Earthscape designer

The Winter 2018 issue of Landscapes|Paysages featured an article on risky play by Laura Williams. The magazine is published by the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects (CSLA). It features articles and projects from landscape architects and associated professionals across Canada. Laura is one of our senior playground designers and project managers, taking projects from the conceptual stage through to final inspection.

The magazine issue focused on Risk in Landscape Architecture. Laura wrote about the “risky business of creating playscapes that are safe and compliant, but still unique and challenging for all children.” The relationship between offering risk in controlled environments – like playgrounds – as a development tool for children is not new. In fact, this issue of the magazine features several articles on just this topic. Laura’s take on risky play is a little bit different. As custom playground designers, we are well-versed in playground safety standards and best practices. We also strive to think outside the box and push the boundaries of play with unique play experiences. As a result, it is a constant balancing act – a risky business, one might say – and we are always up for the challenge!
